Food traditions

Customs to know before you sit down — nothing here to tick off.

Fika

Every day

A pause for coffee and something sweet, taken once or twice a day — at work, at home, in a konditori. It is a verb as well as a noun, and it is about the company as much as the bun.

Midsummer

Late June

The Friday nearest the solstice: a maypole dressed in leaves and flowers, dancing round it, then herring, new potatoes, snaps and the first strawberries.

Crayfish party

August

Kräftskiva: crayfish boiled with crown dill, eaten with your hands under paper lanterns and silly hats, with snaps, songs and Västerbotten tart.

Julbord

Late Nov–Dec

The Christmas buffet, eaten in rounds — herring first, then salmon, then ham, meatballs, sausages and Jansson's temptation, then rice pudding. Restaurants serve it from late November.

Tasted means you have eaten or drunk it, wherever that was — at the source or at home, it counts. Photographs from Wikimedia Commons; credits and licences.
