Gammelstad Church Town
Four hundred church cottages · UNESCO
Walk the lanes of red cottages, still owned by local families and used on church holidays, to the late-medieval Nederluleå church, the only stone building in the village.

In 60 seconds
Luleå sits at the top of the Gulf of Bothnia, an hour south of the Arctic Circle, and it is the gateway to Sweden's far north. Ten kilometres up the river is Gammelstad, the best-preserved church town in northern Scandinavia: more than four hundred little red cottages around a 15th-century stone church, built so that farmers who travelled for a day to reach Sunday service had somewhere to sleep. The land has risen so fast since the Ice Age that the medieval harbour dried up, and in 1649 the town moved to the coast. Offshore lies an archipelago of more than a thousand islands, reached by boat in summer and, from January to April, by ploughed ice roads across the frozen sea. Come in June for nights that never quite darken, or in late winter for the ice and the northern lights.

More than a thousand islands in the Bothnian Bay
Summer tour boats run to islands such as Hindersön and Kluntarna for walks, saunas and fish lunches; pack swimwear for the shallow, sun-warmed bays.
Roads ploughed across the frozen sea
From January to April, cleared roads link the mainland to inhabited islands — the longest runs about fifteen kilometres. Drive, skate or walk out on the sea.

Context
Enough to make what you are looking at legible.
Nederluleå's stone church is built; the parish's church cottages grow up around it.
The rising land leaves the old harbour too shallow, and Luleå moves to its present site on the coast.
Gammelstad Church Town is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
