Why Visby's Ringmuren is Europe's finest preserved commercial fortress
Enclosing the UNESCO World Heritage town of Visby on the island of Gotland, Ringmuren is Northern Europe's most intact medieval stone city wall. Stretching roughly 3.5 kilometres in length and studded with 36 original towers and gates, it was erected during the 13th and 14th centuries by the wealthy German and Gotlandic merchant guilds of the Hanseatic League.
Unlike walls built solely against foreign armies, Visby's ramparts were famously built partly to defend the cosmopolitan merchant city from the island's own Gotlandic farming peasantry, culminating in the historic Battle of Visby in 1361 when Danish King Valdemar Atterdag breached the defences.
Walking the grassy perimeter paths along the outer moats and inner cobblestone lanes reveals an enchanting tapestry of medieval lime mortar, soaring ruined gothic churches, overgrown heirloom climbing roses, and panoramic sea views across the Baltic.

When to go
Visby is delightful from late spring through autumn. High summer in July and August brings buzzing open-air cafes and warm swimming off the harbour piers. In August, Medeltidsveckan (Medieval Week) animates the walls with jousting, craft fairs, and period dress.
Getting there
Take the modern Destination Gotland car and passenger ferry from Nynäshamn (three hours south of Stockholm) or Oskarshamn (three hours) directly to Visby harbour, which is just a five-minute walk from the city walls. Regular domestic flights also connect Visby Airport with Stockholm.
Booking & permits
Walking around the exterior and interior of Ringmuren is completely free and requires no tickets. Ferries and holiday accommodation during summer and Medieval Week should be booked several weeks ahead.
