Nature translated into sacred stone, glass and iron

Antoni Gaudí did not merely design buildings; he created a revolutionary architectural language derived from the laws of nature. Declaring that 'nature does not contain straight lines or sharp angles,' he replaced traditional European classical orders with hyperbolic paraboloids, catenary arches, and columns that branch outward like the canopy of an ancient Mediterranean forest.

Step inside the Sagrada Família, begun in 1882, and the sensation is not one of heavy masonry but of standing inside an illuminated living grove. As sunlight filters through Joan Vila-Grau's stained-glass windows, cold ocean blues and greens on the east give way to fiery sunset ambers and rubies on the west, transforming the interior stone columns into pillars of living light.

The essential Gaudí Modernisme route

1

The soaring forest of the Sagrada Família

Begin at the Sagrada Família. Stand before the intricate, hand-carved stones of the Nativity Facade—the only facade completed under Gaudí's direct personal supervision—before entering the soaring nave.

2

Tower views above Barcelona

Take a dedicated lift up one of the Nativity or Passion towers to look out over the Mediterranean and view the colorful ceramic fruit pinnacles at close range.

3

Modernisme masterpieces of Passeig de Gràcia

Afterward, travel along the grand boulevard of Passeig de Gràcia to marvel at the undulating sea-foam facade of Casa Batlló and ascend to the surreal warrior-chimney roof terrace of Casa Milà (La Pedrera).

Plan your experience

When to go

Year-round. Spring and autumn offer comfortable walking temperatures and clear skies. For the most dramatic light inside the basilica, visit in mid-afternoon when the western sun floods the nave in warm reds and golds.

Getting there

The Sagrada Família metro station sits right outside the temple gates (Metro Lines 2 and 5). Passeig de Gràcia is a pleasant 20-minute downhill stroll through the grid streets of the Eixample.
