Why watch the sunset from Mount Teide?
Mount Teide is the third-highest volcanic structure on Earth when measured from its Atlantic ocean-floor base. At sunset, an extraordinary optical spectacle unfolds: Teide's shadow projects eastward onto the Atlantic, creating an immense geometric pyramid that touches the horizon.
Looking west across the 800-metre wide volcanic caldera of Pico Viejo, the sun descends through layers of amber, violet and rose. On clear days, the silhouette of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro appear as islands floating in a quiet sea of white cloud.
What to expect
8-minute cable car ascent
Ascend 1,199 vertical metres in under 8 minutes from the base station to La Rambleta at 3,555 metres.
Trail to Mirador de Pico Viejo
Walk Trail No. 12 along volcanic lava beds towards the western overlook, taking time to adjust to the thinner air.
Sunset over the caldera
Gaze down into the multicoloured crater of Pico Viejo while the sun dips below the horizon, followed by the appearance of the Belt of Venus.
