Why experience an authentic Finnish smoke sauna?
Inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, sauna culture is the cornerstone of Finnish identity, hygiene, and spiritual well-being. Among all sauna varieties, the chimneyless smoke sauna (savusauna) is universally revered as the ancient, noble progenitor. It takes six to eight hours of slow hardwood burning to heat the several-tonne granite stove, after which the room is ventilated of acrid smoke, leaving behind a velvety, aromatic radiance and walls seasoned with sterile birch soot.
The steam (löyly) produced when water hits these massive stones is uniquely soft, deep, and humid, avoiding the harsh searing bite of modern electric heaters. Sitting quietly in the dim, amber-lit warmth, brushing your shoulders with a fragrant fresh birch whisk (vihta), and then walking down the wooden dock to submerge into the cool, dark waters of Lake Kallavesi leaves both body and mind in a state of profound peace that Finns call 'saunanjälkeinen'.
The smoke sauna ritual step by step
Rinse and enter the aromatic amber warmth
Rinse off in the washroom and enter the spacious log cabin, taking a seat on the high soot-cured timber benches as gentle steam circulates through the room.
Whisk with birch twigs and breathe the woodsmoke essence
Dip a fresh birch whisk into warm water and gently tap your skin to stimulate circulation, filling the room with the sweet fragrance of summer forest foliage.
Plunge into the fresh waters of Lake Kallavesi
Walk down the wooden bathing dock and lower yourself into the clear freshwater lake, floating on your back while gazing at forested shorelines before returning for the next round.

When to go
Traditional public smoke sauna evenings run year-round on scheduled weekdays. Summer offers midnight swims under pastel skies; autumn brings golden birch reflections; winter provides the exhilarating thrill of stepping from 90°C heat directly into a carved ice hole (avanto).
Getting there
Kuopio is easily reached by train or plane from Helsinki. From central Kuopio, local city bus 7 runs directly to the Rauhalahti resort area in 15 minutes, followed by a short woodland walk to the Jätkänkämppä lumberjack lodge.
Booking & permits
Public smoke sauna evenings (typically Tuesdays and Thursdays) fill up quickly with local bathers and international travellers. Book your entry and optional lumberjack buffet dinner online in advance via Spa Hotel Rauhalahti.
What to bring
- Swimwear (swimsuits are required during mixed public sauna evenings at Jätkänkämppä)
- Towels and sauna seat cover (pefletti), which can also be rented on site
- Flip-flops or water slippers for comfortable walking along the wooden dock
Before you go
- Stay hydrated: drink plenty of fresh spring water or traditional Finnish berry juice between sauna rounds.
- The dark soot on the walls is completely sterile and natural; avoid leaning directly against wall logs to prevent soot marks on light towels.
