Why bathe in Iceland's geothermal waters?

Born from a unique union of subterranean volcanic heat and pristine Atlantic seawater 2,000 metres beneath the earth's crust, the water of the Blue Lagoon is entirely self-renewing every 40 hours. Enriched with bioactive silica, mineral salts, and specialized microalgae, the opaque, chalky-cyan water reflects sunlight with a surreal luminosity that has become an international icon of Icelandic wellness.

Wading through steam into the 38°C mineral warmth while Arctic sea breezes cool your face offers an elemental reset. Applying pure white silica mud from swim-up bars smooths the skin, while hidden lava caves and hot waterfall showers provide deep muscular recovery after hiking Iceland's rugged highlands and glaciers.

The geothermal bathing ritual step by step

1

Follow the traditional Nordic shower ritual

Icelandic geothermal bathing etiquette requires a thorough soap shower before entering the communal thermal pools to keep the mineral waters pristine.

2

Wade into the steaming cyan lagoon

Step from the indoor access channel directly into the 37–39°C warm water, drifting between quiet lava coves, wooden footbridges, and steaming crevices.

3

Apply the all-natural silica and mineral face masks

Swim up to the in-water mask bar to apply pure silica mud, leaving it on until dry to deeply cleanse and soothe the skin before rinsing directly in the lagoon.

When to go

The lagoon is open 365 days a year. Midwinter brings the atmospheric drama of snow falling on hot steam and potential northern lights sightings overhead. In June and July, the midnight sun casts soft golden hour light late into the evening.

Getting there

The Blue Lagoon is conveniently located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, just 20 minutes from Keflavík International Airport and 45 minutes from central Reykjavík. Dedicated transfer buses (Destination Blue Lagoon) connect with all major airline arrivals and departures.

Booking & permits

Every visitor must book a timed-entry ticket online well in advance via the official website (bluelagoon.com). Walk-in entry is not permitted. Morning slots or twilight evening slots offer quieter atmospheres.

What to bring

  • Swimwear (towel is included in standard entry; bathrobes provided with premium packages)
  • Leave-in hair conditioner (high silica content stiffens hair temporarily; apply conditioner before entering and leave it in)
  • Waterproof phone case or pouch if taking photos while wading through steam

Before you go

  • Remove all silver jewellery before entering the water, as natural sulfur minerals can tarnish silver finishes.
  • Check regional volcanic and road status alerts on the official SafeTravel.is portal before driving across the Reykjanes peninsula.
