The quintessential French Riviera ritual
Since the English aristocracy popularized the winter climate of Nice in the 18th century and artists like Matisse and Chagall immortalized its luminous light, the Baie des Anges has remained the definitive Mediterranean seaside setting.
Swimming here is distinct: the beach is composed of smooth, polished grey limestone pebbles (galets) that keep the water remarkably transparent without clouding from sand. Floating on your back with the sun overhead, listening to the gentle clatter of stones rolled by the gentle swell, is the essence of French Riviera leisure.
What to expect from a swim in Nice
Choosing between public and private beaches
Select a free municipal pebble cove with public showers (such as Plage des Ponchettes or Voilier) or an established private beach club with padded sun loungers and waiter service.
Entering the clear water
Step over the rounded stones (water shoes recommended) into deep, buoyant seawater that drops off quickly into calm, swimming depths.
Post-swim Promenade stroll and Socca
Dry off on the warm pebbles before walking into nearby Cours Saleya in Old Nice (Vieux Nice) for crisp chickpea socca fresh from the wood-fired griddle.

When to go
Mid-summer (July–August) offers the warmest water (around 24–25°C). June and September provide glorious sunshine with fewer visitors.
Getting there
Tramway Line 2 runs directly from Nice Airport to the Jean Médecin and Garibaldi stations. The beach is accessible by steps along the entire 7km length of the Promenade des Anglais.
Booking & permits
Public beaches require no booking. Private beach clubs (such as Plage Beau Rivage or Castel Plage) require reservations 1–3 days in advance during July and August.
What to bring
- Neoprene water shoes or water sandals to navigate the smooth pebbles comfortably
- A thick beach towel or padded beach mat, UV sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen
Before you go
- Note the safety flags: green indicates calm supervised swimming; yellow warns of chop or jellyfish
- Free municipal lockers and cold freshwater showers are available along the public sections of the Promenade
