The wind capital of the Canary Islands

Situated on the windswept southern tip of Tenerife, El Médano is universally recognized as one of the world's premier destinations for board sports. Funneled between the towering mass of Mount Teide and the Atlantic Ocean, the Northeast trade winds (los alisios) blow with steady reliability, creating ideal conditions for kitesurfing, windsurfing, and wing foiling.

Yet what sets El Médano apart from commercial resort strips is its relaxed, unpretentious bohemian surf town vibe. Sandy boardwalks are lined with surf schools, organic bakeries, and open-air bars where international athletes and local Canarios mingle barefoot. To the west, the protected Special Nature Reserve of Montaña Roja forms an awe-inspiring volcanic silhouette against the turquoise ocean swells.

A day on the Atlantic waves

1

Morning surf on the town break

Head out in the early morning before the breeze strengthens to catch clean Atlantic peelers breaking gently over the sandy seabed of the town bay.

2

Afternoon wind sports session

As the thermal trade winds build in the early afternoon, take to the water for a kitesurfing or wing foiling lesson with certified instructors in the designated sports zone.

3

Sunset climb up Montaña Roja

Dry off in the late afternoon and hike the 20-minute trail up to the summit of the Montaña Roja volcanic cone to watch the sunset paint the Atlantic in copper hues.

When to go

Year-round. Summer (June to August) brings the most consistent high-wind days for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Winter (November to March) offers clean swells and comfortable water temperatures (19–21°C) with low crowds.

Getting there

El Médano is only a 10-minute drive from Tenerife South Airport (TFS). TITSA bus lines 415 and 470 connect directly to the town centre and beach.

Booking & permits

Book surf and kitesurf rental packages or multi-day courses in advance, particularly during summer school holidays and the PWA World Cup windsurfing events in July/August.

What to bring

  • Wetsuit: 2mm shorty or rashguard in summer; 3/2mm full suit for winter sessions
  • Water-resistant sports sunscreen and polarised sunglasses
  • Windbreaker jacket for breezy late afternoons on the boardwalk

Before you go

  • Pay strict attention to the zoned bathing and sports flags: swimmers have designated zones separate from kitesurfers and windsurfers for safety.
