Why swimming beneath Kaneo is one of Europe's most sacred and sensual encounters with water
Formed between two and three million years ago, Lake Ohrid is among the most ancient and deepest lakes on Earth. Its waters are so remarkably clean, clear, and biologically isolated that over 200 endemic species thrive here, earning it dual UNESCO World Heritage status for both cultural and natural superlatives.
On a rocky promontory jutting boldly into the deep blue water stands the thirteenth-century Church of Saint John at Kaneo. Built of warm red brick, stone, and ceramic tile in classic Byzantine cruciform style, it commands an uninterrupted panoramic vista across the vast expanse of the lake toward the distant Albanian mountains.
Descending the stone steps from the church leads to a quiet pebble cove and smooth flat sunbathing rocks. Dropping into the clear, cool freshwater while gazing straight up at the red brick dome perched high against the blue Macedonian sky is an experience found nowhere else in the world.
