The impenetrable white stone shield of the Republic of Ragusa
Between the 14th and 17th centuries, the sovereign merchant maritime Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) preserved its independence between the warring empires of the Ottoman Turks and the Venetian Republic through diplomatic cunning and an extraordinary system of fortifications. Encircling the entire medieval city without interruption for nearly two kilometres, these colossal white limestone walls reach up to 25 metres in height and up to six metres in thickness, reinforced by three circular forts, fourteen square towers, and two corner bastions.
Walking the battlements at 08:00 when the gates unlock is one of the supreme urban walks in the world. As the morning sun rises over Mount Srđ, the limestone flagstones glow with warm luminescence. To your left, waves crash against the sheer cliff base in electric shades of turquoise and sapphire; to your right, looking down into intimate convent cloisters, narrow cobblestone stairways, and laundry fluttering between terracotta roofs, the entire living medieval city unfolds like an open manuscript.

Walk the sheer seaward ramparts

Conquer Fort Minčeta for the ultimate view
Climb the circular spiral stairs to the top of Fort Minčeta at the northwest corner of the walls for the iconic panorama over the sea of orange roofs and the island of Lokrum.

When to go
May, June, September, and October are ideal. In July and August, temperatures on the unshaded stone ramparts regularly exceed 35°C by 11:00; walking at 08:00 or after 17:30 is essential to avoid dangerous heat exhaustion and cruise ship crowds.
Getting there
The Old Town is strictly pedestrianised. City bus lines (1A, 1B, 3, 4, 6) terminate directly outside Pile Gate. If arriving by car, park at the Gruž harbour or Ilijina Glavica garage and take the bus down.
Booking & permits
Buy the official 'Dubrovnik Pass' (1-day, 3-day, or 7-day) online in advance: it costs the same as a single regular wall ticket, but includes free entry to the walls, Fort Lovrijenac, Rector's Palace, eight city museums, and free city bus rides.
What to bring
- Sun hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen (the white limestone creates intense reflection and there is zero shade)
- At least one large bottle of drinking water (water can be purchased from small stalls on the wall, but at premium prices)
- Sturdy walking shoes (the stone steps are worn smooth and can be slippery)
Before you go
- The wall route is strictly ONE-WAY (anti-clockwise): you cannot turn around once you begin your circuit.
- Your wall ticket also grants entry to Fort Lovrijenac (the 'Gibraltar of Dubrovnik') located on the cliff just outside the walls.
