Centuries of heroic human agriculture on sheer sea cliffs
The Cinque Terre (Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore) cling to vertical coastal cliffs that plunge into the Ligurian Sea. Over a millennium, local farmers constructed over 7,000 kilometres of dry-stone walls (muretti a secco) by hand, creating narrow terraced ledges to cultivate olive groves, lemon orchards, and prized grapes.
Walking the historic footpath (Sentiero Verde Azzurro / SVA) is an intimate encounter with this heroic landscape. Every crest brings breathtaking vistas: shimmering turquoise waters below, scented wild rosemary and pine needles underfoot, and colourful towers of pastel houses clustering tightly around natural rocky harbours.
What to expect when hiking the trail
The terraced ascent
Climb ancient stone steps out of Vernazza or Monterosso, winding through shaded lemon groves and hillside vineyards equipped with tiny monorail carts.
The high cliffline traverse
Walk along narrow rocky footpaths cut into the cliff face 150 to 200 metres above the breaking Mediterranean surf.
The village descent and reward
Descend into the next pastel village for a refreshing swim off the rocks, followed by fresh focaccia di Recco and a cone of fried calamari.

When to go
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer ideal hiking temperatures. Avoid hiking in July and August midday when trails are intensely hot and unshaded.
Getting there
The Cinque Terre Express train runs every 15 minutes between La Spezia and Levanto, stopping at all five villages. Leave your car behind; driving between villages is impractical.
Booking & permits
Access to the main coastal hiking trail (Sentiero Azzurro segments Monterosso-Vernazza and Vernazza-Corniglia) requires the 'Cinque Terre Trekking Card' or 'Cinque Terre Train Card', purchasable online or at station kiosks.
What to bring
- Sturdy hiking shoes with rugged tread (open sandals and flip-flops are legally prohibited on national park trails)
