Why Plitvice Lakes is Europe's most enchanting aquatic wonderland
Inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list in 1979 as one of the world's first natural heritage treasures, Plitvice Lakes National Park is a geological miracle. Over millennia, calcium carbonate dissolved in karst runoff has precipitated out of the water with the help of mosses, algae, and aquatic bacteria to form living travertine (tufa) barriers that continuously grow at a rate of roughly one centimetre per year.
These natural biological dams have created a staircase of sixteen cascading lakes divided into the dramatic canyon of the Lower Lakes and the serene, forested Upper Lakes. The water changes color continuously throughout the day—shifting from ethereal turquoise and azure to deep jade emerald depending on mineral concentration, sunlight angle, and microscopic organisms.
Walking across miles of raised wooden boardwalks built just inches above swirling pools, feeling the cold spray of 78-metre Veliki Slap, and peering down into water so pure you can count every pebble and spot brown trout darting among submerged petrified trees is an overwhelming sensory revelation.
Following the wooden paths over cascades and canyons
Entrance 1 overview of the Great Waterfall
Gaze down from the rim viewpoint into the deep limestone gorge where Veliki Slap roars into turquoise pools below.
Walking the Lower Lakes boardwalks
Descend into the canyon along snaking timber walkways crossing directly over bubbling travertine channels and crystal-clear lakes.
Electric boat crossing on Lake Kozjak
Board a silent electric passenger boat to glide across Lake Kozjak, the park's largest and deepest expanse of water.
Upper Lakes cascades and panoramic train return
Explore the intimate, heavily forested waterfalls of the Upper Lakes before catching the park's electric shuttle train back to the base.

When to go
May and June provide full rushing waterfalls fed by snowmelt and vibrant lush vegetation. Autumn in September and October brings crisp sunny air and breathtaking golden beech trees reflected in still water. In winter, frozen icefalls create an otherworldly crystal kingdom.
Getting there
Situated halfway between Zagreb and the Dalmatian coast, roughly two hours' drive from Zagreb or Zadar. Regular long-distance coaches stop directly outside Entrance 1 and Entrance 2.
Booking & permits
Visitor numbers are strictly capped each day to protect park ecology. Purchasing a timed-entry ticket online in advance through the official national park website (np-plitvicka-jezera.hr) at least two days ahead is mandatory, especially from May through October.
What to bring
- Sturdy walking shoes or hiking trainers with non-slip soles (boardwalks can be wet and slippery near waterfalls)
- Waterproof jacket or light rain poncho to stay dry near the spray of Veliki Slap
- Refillable water bottle and packed snacks for trail breaks
- Camera with polarizing filter to cut surface glare and capture vivid water clarity
Before you go
- Arrive at your assigned entrance 15 to 30 minutes before your booked entry hour
- Your entrance ticket includes the electric boat rides on Lake Kozjak and the panoramic train shuttles
- Stick strictly to the marked wooden boardwalks and gravel trails; wandering off-path damages fragile tufa deposits
