The cradle of Rhine Romanticism and medieval castle density
The 65-kilometre stretch of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley between Bingen and Koblenz represents Europe's densest concentration of medieval castles. Slicing through the Rhenish Slate Mountains, the Rhine river carved a dramatic, narrow gorge where medieval robber barons, archbishops, and emperors erected forty fortified castles and toll towers on sheer rocky spurs to extract lucrative taxes from passing merchant ships.
In the 19th century, poets and painters like Lord Byron, Victor Hugo, and William Turner fell in love with the dramatic beauty of the gorge, inspiring the 'Rhine Romanticism' movement. Today, cruising past the near-vertical slate terraces of the Mittelrhein wine region—where Riesling grapes have been harvested by hand since Roman times—remains one of the quintessential European river journeys, accompanied by the legendary folk tale of the Loreley siren who lured sailors onto treacherous river rocks.

When to go
April through October when passenger steamers operate daily scheduled timetables. September and October are especially vibrant with village wine harvest festivals and glowing golden foliage.
Getting there
Both riverbanks are paralleled by picturesque railway lines: the Left Rhine Line (Mainz–Bingen–Koblenz) and Right Rhine Line (Wiesbaden–Rüdesheim–Koblenz). Hop-on, hop-off train and boat combinations are effortless.
Booking & permits
KD river tickets can be purchased at pier ticket kiosks on the day or booked online in advance. Eurail and Interrail pass holders receive a 20% discount on scheduled KD steamers.
What to bring
- Windbreaker or jacket (even on warm sunny days, open boat decks have a brisk headwind breeze)
- Binoculars or camera with telephoto zoom to inspect cliff-hanging castle ramparts
- Comfortable walking shoes for exploring cobblestone town alleys and fortress ruins
Before you go
- Travel downstream (south to north, e.g., Bingen/Rüdesheim to St. Goar/Boppard): the boat travels much faster with the current (approx. 1h 30m vs. 2h 30m upstream).
