Seven millennia of salt mining in an enchanted alpine fjord

Tucked tightly into a narrow ribbon of land between the near-vertical limestone cliffs of the Dachstein massif and the dark, mirror-like waters of the Hallstätter See, Hallstatt is one of the most enchantingly picturesque alpine settlements on earth. For thousands of years, the village had no road connection at all, accessible only by boat across the water or via steep mountain mule tracks.

Human civilization here predates classical antiquity. The high valley holds the oldest salt mine in the world, mined continuously since 5000 BC and giving its name to the entire European 'Hallstatt Culture' of the early Iron Age. Standing on the modern cantilevered Skywalk viewing platform high above the village, the view looking down onto the Gothic church spire, timber boathouses, and the sheer fjord walls reflects the astonishing harmony of human ingenuity and pristine alpine nature.

When to go

Spring (May to June) and autumn (September to October) offer clear alpine air and vivid blue skies. In winter, snow-dusted roofs turn Hallstatt into a living snowglobe. Midsummer midday hours can be crowded with day-trippers.

Getting there

Take the ÖBB regional train via Attnang-Puchheim to 'Hallstatt Bahnhof'. The historic passenger ferry meets every arriving train and sails right to the town market square pier (cash fare only).

Booking & permits

Purchase combined Salzbergbahn funicular and Salzwelten salt mine tickets online in advance to bypass ticket counter lines during peak hours.
