The eternal alpine glamour of the Lario
Plunging over 400 metres deep into the earth between steep Alpine slopes, Lake Como (known locally as Il Lario) has enchanted poets, composers, and travellers since Roman times. Pliny the Younger built villas along its shores, and Franz Liszt found inspiration in its luminous reflections.
Experiencing Lake Como from the water is essential: the grandest villas—Villa Carlotta, Villa Melzi, and Villa del Balbianello—were designed primarily to be approached by boat. From the open deck of a ferry gliding between Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio, you see terraced gardens cascading directly into emerald waters against the backdrop of the Grigna mountain range.
What to expect on a Lake Como boat trip
Boarding the central lake ferry
Step onto an open-air public ferry or historic steamship (battello) at Varenna or Bellagio, feeling the gentle lake breeze as the vessel casts off.
Approaching historic lakeside villas
Glide past magnificent loggias, sculpted cypresses, and stone boat landings draped in wisteria and climbing roses.
Strolling the lakeside promenades
Disembark at Bellagio or Varenna to explore cobblestone stairways, artisan silk boutiques, and waterfront cafés serving local risotto with perch fillets (risotto con pesce persico).
