Why Crno Jezero is the sublime emotional heart of Montenegro's highlands

Hidden within UNESCO-listed Durmitor National Park, Crno Jezero (Black Lake) is celebrated as the most beautiful of northern Montenegro's 18 glacial 'mountain eyes' (gorske oči). Composed of two interconnected bodies of water—the Big Lake and the Small Lake—the basin sits at an altitude of 1,416 metres, wrapped in ancient black pine and spruce forests.

The lake earns its evocative name from the dramatic reflection cast by the looming, 2,287-metre wall of Mount Medjed (The Bear), which turns the deep waters an intense, velvety sapphire-black on calm mornings. Walking the lakeside path carries you past bubbling cold mountain springs and fragrant pine-needle carpets.

Unlike heavily commercialised Alpine resorts, Durmitor retains a quiet, brooding wilderness character. Wooden rowboats glide across the placid water, and the sounds of mountain wind through needles and birdsong dominate the air.

Walking the circular shore trail beneath Medjed

1

The entrance promenade

Walk through the park barrier along an asphalted avenue flanked by towering black pines down to the lake shore.

2

The Big Lake shoreline

Follow the well-maintained dirt path around Veliko Jezero, stopping at wooden benches and pebble coves.

3

The narrow strait and Small Lake

Cross the scenic strait connecting both lakes, where in midsummer water cascades gently through a natural stone culvert.

4

Lakeside boat rental or cafe

Rent a classic wooden rowboat to paddle across the mirrored surface or relax at the rustic log-cabin restaurant on the shore.

When to go

June through October is optimal. July and August bring sunny alpine days, while September and October offer crisp autumn foliage when the golden beech trees contrast against evergreen pines.

Booking & permits

No advance booking is required. Park entry passes are purchased directly at the ranger wooden kiosk at the entrance gate.
