The navel of the ancient classical cosmos
According to ancient myth, Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of the universe; where their paths crossed on the crags of Mount Parnassus, they marked the 'omphalos'—the navel of the earth. For over a millennium, from the 8th century BC to the late Roman era, Delphi served as the spiritual axis of the Mediterranean world. City-states from Syracuse to Sparta sent envoys with immense treasuries to consult Apollo's priestess, the Pythia, before embarking on wars, founding colonies, or promulgating new laws.
The setting itself is awe-inspiring. Perched on sheer limestone terraces between the twin shining Phaedriades cliffs, the sanctuary gazes thousands of feet down across the 'Sea of Olives'—a continuous silver canopy of over a million ancient olive trees stretching through the Pleistos Gorge all the way to the blue Gulf of Corinth.

Pass the Athenian Treasury and monumental votive inscriptions, winding upward along the stone path carved with the dedications of classical Greek poleis.
Stand before the Temple of Apollo and Theater
Pause at the foundations of Apollo's adyton, then climb to the 5,000-seat classical theatre whose tiers frame an astonishing view of the valley below.
Ascend to the mountain stadium and Delphi Museum
Hike up through pine trees to the stone-tiered ancient Pythian Games stadium before descending to the Delphi Museum to behold the world-famous bronze Charioteer of Delphi.
