The Italianate Baroque stage of the Prince-Archbishops

Framed by steep limestone cliffs (Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg) and the glacial Salzach river, Salzburg was governed for centuries by sovereign Prince-Archbishops who combined spiritual authority with immense wealth from the Alpine salt trade. In the 17th century, Italian architects Vincenzo Scamozzi and Santino Solari rebuilt the medieval city in triumphant Italian Baroque, creating an open-air theatrical stage of monumental marble piazzas, bubbling fountains, and resonant cathedrals.

Here in 1756, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born. To hear his divertimenti and string quartets performed inside the historic Marmorsaal (Marble Hall) of Mirabell Palace or high within the Gothic Golden Chamber of the Hohensalzburg Fortress is an acoustic revelation: the sound reverberates off centuries-old stucco and gilded timber, while through open lancet windows the church bells of the Baroque city chime across the valley.

When to go

Year-round. Summer (July to August) hosts the Salzburg Festival (Salzburger Festspiele), the pinnacle of global opera and drama. December transforms the cathedral square into a fairy-tale Christmas market filled with choral singing.

Getting there

Salzburg Hauptbahnhof is a major rail junction with direct ÖBB Railjet and Westbahn trains from Vienna (2 hours 20 mins) and Munich (1 hour 30 mins). The old town is completely pedestrianized.

Booking & permits

Book fortress concert tickets and Mirabell Palace concerts 1 to 4 weeks in advance. For the Salzburger Festspiele, ticket applications open in December/January for summer performances.

What to bring

  • Smart-casual attire for evening classical concerts (jackets recommended for festival halls)
  • Comfortable walking shoes for old town flagstones and cobblestones
  • Small umbrella (Salzburg is famous for its sudden, refreshing drizzle, known as 'Schnürlregen')

Before you go

  • The Salzburg Card gives free 24-hour admission to all city museums, Mozart residences, and the fortress funicular, plus free trolleybus rides.
  • Sample original Salzburger Mozartkugeln (pistachio marzipan and nougat chocolates in blue-silver foil) at Café-Konditorei Fürst, who invented them in 1890.
