Salzburg in 60 seconds

Salzburg rises dramatically between the Salzach river and sheer limestone cliffs: a UNESCO-listed baroque ensemble overlooked by the 11th-century Hohensalzburg Fortress. The old town is compact and largely pedestrian, and a funicular saves the climb to the fortress. Come early or late to Mozart's birthplace and the Getreidegasse, then cross the river to the Mirabell Gardens and the quieter Steingasse. The Salzburg Festival fills July and August — book months ahead — and Advent brings the Christmas markets. Two to four days gives time for a cathedral organ recital, a stein at the Augustiner Bräu and an excursion to the Salzkammergut lakes.
