Markovi Kuli
Fortified ridge above the town with medieval walls and towers among granite outcrops
Climb from Varoš in the late afternoon; the walls are unfenced and the boulders do most of the work.

In 60 seconds
Prilep sits at the foot of a hill of enormous rounded granite boulders, and the whole town is organised around looking up at them. On the ridge are Markovi Kuli, Marko's Towers — a fortified site occupied since the Bronze Age but named for Prince Marko Mrnjavčević, who ruled this part of Macedonia in the late fourteenth century. Below the walls the old Varoš quarter keeps a scatter of small medieval churches, and from there a long marked path climbs to Treskavec, a monastery on a bare shoulder of the mountain whose name refers to the lightning the place attracts. Prilep is also the centre of Macedonian tobacco and of the country's marble quarries.

Monastery of the Dormition on a bare mountain shoulder, with 14th-century frescoes
Roughly two hours up on a marked path, with no water and no shade; fire has damaged the buildings, so check before going.
Old quarter of low houses and small medieval churches on the slope below the fortress
Find Saint Nicholas and the Archangel Michael; both are tiny, dark and far older than they look.
Museum of the crop that built the modern town, from seedbeds to grading and export
Unglamorous and genuinely illuminating about why this town exists in its present form.
Eat
A short list, kept short on purpose. Each entry answers one question: when is this the right choice?
Too few picks yet for their own heading, so they share this list.
Grills and family restaurants around the centre, cooking Pelagonian standards
Order pastrmajlija if it is on; this is the half of the country that bakes it best.
Pavement cafés around the main square and the clock tower
A good place to wait out the midday heat before walking up to the towers.
Beyond the obvious
Less obvious, rarely queued for, and usually the part people remember.
Peak above Treskavec, continuing the ridge walk to a wide view over the Pelagonian plain
Another hour beyond the monastery, and the view back down over the boulder field is the payoff.
Working quarries of white Prilep marble on the hills outside town, visible from the road
Not a visitor site, but the white scars on the hills explain a great deal of the region's architecture.

Context
Enough to make what you are looking at legible.
The granite ridge above the town was occupied and fortified long before any of its standing walls were built.
Prince Marko Mrnjavčević ruled this part of Macedonia from the fortress that still carries his name.
The churches of the Varoš quarter were built and painted, and Treskavec was endowed on the mountain above.
Tobacco growing and grading made Prilep a trading town, and the marble quarries opened on the surrounding hills.
A fire at Treskavec destroyed the monastery's residential buildings; restoration work has continued since.
