The lakeside path
Rock-cut footpath following the water from the dam into the narrowest part of the gorge
Walk past where the crowds stop; twenty minutes in, the canyon closes over and the noise ends.

In 60 seconds
Matka is where Skopje goes to get out of Skopje. The Treska river cuts a narrow limestone canyon through the Jakupica foothills, and a dam built in the 1930s turned its lower reach into a still green lake walled in by rock. A footpath runs along the water from the dam to the fourteenth-century monastery church of Saint Andrew, kayaks go out from the boathouse below it, and the cliffs above carry bolted climbing routes. Several caves open at water level, among them Vrelo, a flooded shaft that divers have followed hundreds of metres down without reaching the bottom.

You want solitude at the weekend; on a warm Sunday the dam end of the canyon is as busy as a city park.

Rock-cut footpath following the water from the dam into the narrowest part of the gorge
Walk past where the crowds stop; twenty minutes in, the canyon closes over and the noise ends.
Small church of 1389 at the water's edge, built by a son of King Vukašin, with 14th-century frescoes
The frescoes are dim and unrestored, which is their charm; the setting on the water is extraordinary.
Flat-water paddling between the canyon walls, with boats hired at the boathouse
The only way to reach the far cave mouths, and the best way to see the gorge from below.
Cave opening at the lake's edge over a flooded shaft of exceptional and still unmeasured depth
Reached by boat; the dry chamber is short, and the point is the black water at the back of it.
Eat
A short list, kept short on purpose. Each entry answers one question: when is this the right choice?
Too few picks yet for their own heading, so they share this list.
Restaurant terraces built over the water beside the dam, serving grills and lake fish
Go on a weekday if you want a table on the water; at weekends it fills from late morning.
Simple café at the kayak boathouse where the path into the canyon begins
A coffee here before the walk, looking straight up the gorge, is the right way to start.
Beyond the obvious
Less obvious, rarely queued for, and usually the part people remember.
Bolted limestone routes on the gorge walls above the lake, used by Skopje's climbing clubs
Approach is minutes from the path, which makes this one of the most convenient crags in the Balkans.
Interwar concrete arch dam at the canyon mouth, among the earliest of its kind in the region
Worth a minute of attention on the way in; it is the reason the canyon looks the way it does.
Orientation
How the city is actually divided, and what each part is for.
A single path, a lake, a church and a handful of terraces between vertical walls
There is no settlement here to speak of, which is the whole appeal.
Stay
Areas rather than hotels — pick the right one and the rest follows.
The capital, half an hour away, which is where almost everyone visiting Matka sleeps
Treat Matka as a half-day from Skopje; there is very little reason to stay at the canyon itself.

Context
Enough to make what you are looking at legible.
Saint Andrew's church was built beside the Treska in 1389 by a son of King Vukašin and painted soon after.
A concrete arch dam was built at the canyon mouth, among the first of its type in the region, flooding the lower gorge.
The still water made Matka a centre of Macedonian kayaking, and clubs have been based at the dam ever since.
Cave diving in Vrelo has followed the flooded shaft to remarkable depth without establishing its floor.
Further out
Worth a day if you have one to spare.
The capital, with the largest Ottoman bazaar in the Balkans outside Istanbul
The pairing almost everyone makes: bazaar in the morning, canyon in the afternoon.
Mountain park of forest, a reservoir with a drowned church and the Bigorski monastery
The onward move if the canyon has made you want real mountains rather than a gorge.
