The Makedonium
Modernist Ilinden monument of 1974 by Jordan and Iskra Grabuloski, above the town
Go inside: the stained glass and the round openings turn the shell into something far stranger than it looks.

In 60 seconds
At about 1,350 metres Kruševo is the highest town in North Macedonia, built in tiers on a steep slope by Aromanian and Mijak families who settled here in the early nineteenth century. It is also the country's principal site of political memory. In August 1903, during the Ilinden Uprising against Ottoman rule, insurgents declared a short-lived republic here; it lasted about ten days before Ottoman forces retook and burned much of the town. The events are marked at two places — the battle site at Mečkin Kamen, and the Makedonium, a white concrete monument of 1974 whose round windows and spiked shell make it one of the most striking modernist memorials in the Balkans.

Hillside memorial on the site of the August 1903 stand against Ottoman forces
The national Republic Day ceremony is held here each August; the rest of the year it is empty and bare.
Stone and whitewashed houses on stepped lanes, built by 19th-century Aromanian families
Walk uphill without a route; the houses, with their blind lower walls and wooden upper floors, are the sight.
Gallery devoted to the Kruševo-born painter who shaped Macedonian modern art
A single-room collection, and a reminder that this small town produced more than one national figure.
Eat

Too few picks yet for their own heading, so they share this list.
Small restaurants on the main street serving grills, bean dishes and highland cheese
Order tavče gravče at altitude in cold weather; it is the dish the climate was designed for.
A handful of cafés on the level stretch of the main street, with views out over the plain
The town's social life happens on two hundred metres of pavement; sit on it and you will see all of it.
Beyond the obvious
Less obvious, rarely queued for, and usually the part people remember.
Nineteenth-century town church rebuilt after 1903, with carved fittings and an icon collection
Quiet, and the clearest surviving record of what the Aromanian town looked like before the burning.
Launch sites on the slopes above the town, used for competitions and tandem flights
The thermals here are reliable enough to draw competitions; tandem flights are arranged in town.
