Gračanica monastery church
Five-domed church of about 1321 in banded brick and stone, inside a walled compound
Stand well back from the west front first: the whole point is the way the domes step upward.

In 60 seconds
Gračanica is twenty minutes from Pristina on the Kosovo plain, and its monastery church is one of the most accomplished buildings in the late Byzantine world. Completed around 1321 as a foundation of King Milutin, it stacks five domes over a compressed cross-in-square plan in banded brick and stone, rising in stages so that the whole mass seems to gather upward — a solution medieval builders rarely attempted and almost never brought off this well. The interior is painted throughout. It is one of four components of a UNESCO World Heritage property that has been on the List of World Heritage in Danger since 2006. The Roman city of Ulpiana lies in the fields nearby.

Wall painting of the 1320s covering the interior, with a large Last Judgement in the narthex
The narthex is where to spend your time; the Judgement runs across the whole west wall.
Excavated Roman city on the plain, with walls, gates and an early Christian basilica
Only partly dug and almost always empty; ten minutes from the monastery and worth the detour.
Eat
A short list, kept short on purpose. Each entry answers one question: when is this the right choice?
Too few picks yet for their own heading, so they share this list.
A handful of grills and family restaurants in the village around the monastery
Simple and cheap; most visitors eat in Pristina instead, which is twenty minutes away.
Cafés on the main street of the village, a short walk from the monastery gate
Useful for waiting out a service before the church is opened to visitors.
Beyond the obvious
Less obvious, rarely queued for, and usually the part people remember.
Walled precinct of residential ranges and gardens around the church
Sit in the yard for a while; the compound is a working community and quiet in a particular way.
The wide agricultural basin the monastery sits in, with long views in every direction
Drive the back roads between the monastery and Ulpiana to see why this ground has always mattered.
Orientation
How the city is actually divided, and what each part is for.
Low village on the plain around the walled monastery precinct
Small and entirely ordinary, which makes the church inside the walls more startling.

Context
Enough to make what you are looking at legible.
Ulpiana was founded on the plain nearby and became one of the principal towns of the region.
King Milutin completed the five-domed church at Gračanica over the remains of an earlier basilica.
The interior was painted throughout, including the Last Judgement that fills the narthex wall.
The Kosovo War and the NATO intervention of 1999 brought widespread displacement, and the monastery was placed under international protection.
Gračanica was added to the World Heritage property with two further monuments, and the property was placed on the Danger List.

Worth a day if you have one to spare.
Europe's youngest capital, with a 1461 mosque, a famously strange library and good coffee
The obvious base, and the two make an easy single day together.
Ruined fortress of a medieval silver-mining town on a volcanic hill to the east
Pair the two: a perfect church on the plain, then an empty hill fort above it.
