Nature's sculptural cathedral carved by the Atlantic swell
Ponta da Piedade (Point of Piety) is the geological masterpiece of the Portuguese coast. Over millions of years, the relentless power of Atlantic storms and rainwater dissolving porous Miocene limestone has sculpted a fantastical labyrinth of 20-metre sea stacks, precarious natural arches, hidden blowholes, and sunlit sea grottos with waters of emerald and sapphire clarity.
Experienced from a small traditional wooden fishing boat steered by an experienced local skipper, the caves reveal names bestowed by generations of fishermen: 'A Catedral' (The Cathedral), 'O Elefante' (The Elephant), and 'A Garagem' (The Garage). As the vessel maneuvers through narrow archways with centimetres to spare, the sun illuminates iridescent turquoise pools inside dark sea vaults where barnacles and starfish cling to the water's edge.
How to explore the sea arches of Lagos
Embark from Lagos Marina or the headland stairway
Board a traditional small boat at Lagos Marina for a scenic 15-minute coastal cruise past Batata and Dona Ana beaches, or walk down the 182 stone steps beside the lighthouse to meet a skipper at the water level.
Navigate inside the subterranean grottos
Glide beneath soaring stone arches and enter intimate sea caverns where skylights in the rock ceiling illuminate vivid turquoise water pools.
Walk the panoramic clifftop boardwalk at sunset
After your water tour, stroll the newly built wooden boardwalk system wrapping the cliff edges back towards Praia do Canavial as the setting sun sets the ochre cliffs ablaze with gold.

When to go
May through October offers the calmest waters for boat tours and kayaking. During winter, strong southwest Atlantic swells create spectacular crashing waves against the cliffs, best observed safely from the high boardwalks.
Getting there
From Lagos old town, walk 35 minutes along the coastal road or ride the local 'A Onda' tourist mini-train/bus line 2 directly to the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse. Taxis take just 7 minutes from Lagos Marina.
Booking & permits
Choose small-boat tours (carrying max 8–10 passengers) or guided sea kayaking rather than large catamarans, as large vessels cannot enter the narrow grottoes and sea arches.
What to bring
- Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, and biodegradable sunscreen
- Water-resistant phone case or dry bag for cameras during boat and kayak tours
- Light windbreaker or sweater (ocean breeze can feel chilly even on warm sunny days)
Before you go
- Check morning marine forecasts: boat trips may be diverted or cancelled if ocean swells ('ondulação') exceed safe cave heights.
- Stay strictly on the designated wooden boardwalks on the clifftop: limestone cliff edges are unstable and subject to sudden collapse.
