Why Wieliczka is the world's most breathtaking underground world

Inscribed on UNESCO's inaugural World Heritage list in 1978, the Wieliczka Salt Mine has been continuously exploited since the 13th century, producing 'white gold' that once funded the construction of royal palaces and the founding of Jagiellonian University in Kraków. Over seven centuries, miners carved out a labyrinthine underground universe spanning nine levels, 287 kilometres of galleries, and over 2,000 excavated chambers reaching a depth of 327 metres.

What elevates Wieliczka from an engineering marvel into high art is the deep devotion and craftsmanship of generations of self-taught miners who turned the rock salt into exquisite statues, mythological beasts, and ornate chapels. Everything you see—altarpieces, tiled floors, bas-relief murals, and sparkling chandeliers—is carved entirely from rock salt.

The undisputed crown jewel is the colossal Chapel of Saint Kinga, situated 101 metres beneath the surface. Measuring 54 metres long and 12 metres high, this subterranean cathedral features salt crystal chandeliers, an intricately carved reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper etched into the salt wall, and acoustics so pure that classical concerts resonate with transcendent clarity.

When to go

Wieliczka is an ideal year-round destination because underground conditions remain completely constant regardless of whether it is baking hot, rainy, or freezing on the surface.

Getting there

Take the modern Koleje Małopolskie commuter train from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia station (20 minutes). The Daniłowicz Shaft entrance is a pleasant five-minute walk from the station.

Booking & permits

Visiting the mine is only possible with a licensed guide. Individual tickets for English-language guided tours sell out rapidly in peak months; reserving your time slot online via the official website (kopalnia.pl) in advance is strongly recommended.

What to bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes with rubber soles for walking on salt and wooden steps
  • A light sweater or jacket as underground temperatures are a constant 14 to 16 degrees Celsius
  • Small backpack (large bags over 35x20x20 cm must be stored in the luggage lockers)

Before you go

  • Arrive at the Daniłowicz Shaft at least 15 minutes before your ticketed tour departure time
  • Note that visitors must walk down roughly 380 stairs to begin the tour (an elevator is used for the return trip to the surface)
  • Those seeking an active adventure can alternatively book the Miners' Route, which equips you with overalls, helmets, and headlamps for hands-on mining tasks
