Why the Noon Gun in Valletta connects you to five centuries of maritime chivalry
Perched atop the highest tier of Valletta's imposing sixteenth-century bastions, Upper Barrakka Gardens was originally built as a private retreat and exercise terrace for the Italian Knights of Saint John. Today, its open neoclassical arches frame what is widely regarded as Europe's most spectacular deep-water natural harbour.
Directly below the garden balustrade lies the Saluting Battery, one of the oldest operating saluting batteries on Earth. Every day at midday, artillerymen dressed in authentic nineteenth-century British Royal Artillery uniforms march out with formal ceremonial precision, prime the heavy muzzle-loading cannon, and fire a thunderous blank round across the water.
The sharp crack and billowing cloud of white powder smoke reverberate against the massive honey-coloured limestone walls of Fort St. Angelo across the basin, instantly transporting onlookers back to the era when naval fleets calibrated their marine chronometers by the noon gun.
