Lord Byron's glorious Eden where fairy-tales take physical form

Cooled by Atlantic mists and blanketed by exotic subtropical forest, the granite massif of the Serra de Sintra has drawn Iberian monarchs and mystics for millennia. In the 19th century, King Consort Ferdinand II transformed the ruins of a Hieronymite monastery into the Palácio da Pena, pioneering European Romanticism in architecture by creating a fantastical synthesis of Gothic turrets, Manueline knotwork, Islamic domes, and vibrant polychrome facades.

Below the royal heights, the estate of Quinta da Regaleira immerses visitors in the esoteric symbology of the Knights Templar, Freemasons, and Rosicrucians. Descending the 27-metre spiral stone staircase of the Poço Iniciático (Initiation Well) into subterranean limestone tunnels feels like stepping straight into Dante's Divine Comedy before emerging behind a waterfall into sunlit fern gardens.

Exploring Sintra's royal heights

1

Ascend to Pena Palace at opening time

Board the 434 tourist loop bus or hike the forested Caminho de Santa Maria from Sintra town to reach Pena Palace at your reserved 09:30 morning entry slot.

2

Walk the palace battlements and botanical forest

Tour the royal staterooms, stand beneath the menacing stone sculpture of the Triton arch, and explore the 85-hectare forest of exotic redwood sequoias, camellias, and Australian tree ferns.

3

Descend into the Initiation Well of Quinta da Regaleira

Head down to Quinta da Regaleira to navigate the underground grottoes and stepping-stone lake before tasting warm travesseiros pastries at Casa Piriquita in the historic village.

Plan your experience

When to go

Year-round. Spring brings blooming camellias and azaleas; autumn offers atmospheric morning mists. Sintra's microclimate is typically 3–5°C cooler than central Lisbon with frequent maritime cloud cover.

Getting there

Do NOT drive a rental car: private vehicle access to the upper mountain roads is strictly restricted. Take the direct CP train from Lisbon Rossio (40 mins, leaves every 20 mins) directly to Sintra station.

Booking & permits

Palácio da Pena timed-slot tickets sell out daily during peak months. Purchase tickets online at least 3 to 7 days ahead via the official Parques de Sintra portal (gives a 15% online discount).

What to bring

  • Light rain jacket or windbreaker (mountain mists and wind can arise suddenly even in summer)
  • Sturdy walking shoes with good tread for damp stone steps and forest trails
  • Small torch or charged phone flashlight for subterranean grotto tunnels at Regaleira

Before you go

  • Be punctual for your Pena Palace interior time slot: entry is strictly enforced at the palace doors, which are a 15-minute uphill walk from the park entrance gates.
  • Stop at historic pastelaria Piriquita in Sintra town to try 'travesseiros' (almond and egg-cream puff pastries) and local Sintra cheesecakes ('queijadas').
