Why Prague Castle is the architectural heart of Central Europe

Sprawling across nearly 70,000 square metres high above the left bank of the Vltava River, Prague Castle (Pražský hrad) holds the Guinness record as the largest ancient coherent castle complex on Earth. Founded in the 9th century by Prince Bořivoj, it has served as the seat of Bohemian kings, Holy Roman emperors, and modern Czech presidents, reflecting over a millennium of continuous European architectural evolution.

The beating spiritual heart of the complex is the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saints Vitus, Wenceslaus and Adalbert. Begun in 1344 by Emperor Charles IV and master builder Peter Parler, and completed only in 1929, the cathedral is a triumph of soaring stone buttresses, glowing stained glass created by Czech Art Nouveau master Alfons Mucha, and the jewel-encrusted Saint Wenceslaus Chapel where the Bohemian coronation jewels are secured under seven locks.

Beyond the cathedral, walking through the cavernous Vladislav Hall in the Old Royal Palace, discovering the miniature timber-and-plaster dwellings of the Golden Lane, and descending through the terraced South Gardens with all of Prague's hundred spires laid out before you is an unmissable European journey.

Getting there
