Why Mdina after dark is Europe's most evocative step back in time
Perched commandingly on a high plateau in the centre of Malta, Mdina served as the island's ancient capital from Phoenician and Roman times until the Knights arrived in 1530. Known throughout the Mediterranean as 'The Silent City' (Il-Belt Siekta), Mdina today is a completely preserved living medieval citadel where vehicle traffic is strictly restricted to its fewer than 300 residents.
While day-tripping bus tours crowd the main thoroughfare during peak midday hours, Mdina undergoes an astonishing metamorphosis as evening falls. The tour buses depart, shop shutters close, and an extraordinary monastic hush settles over the narrow sandstone corridors.
As twilight deepens, warm wrought-iron lanterns flicker to life along the blind stone facades and Norman archways. Walking through these silent, echoing canyon-like lanes to the northern bastions—where the lights of Valletta, Mosta Dome, and coastal fishing harbours glitter in the dark distance—is an unforgettable encounter with living history.
