Why Berat is Europe's most intact and living Ottoman hillside town

Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, the 2,400-year-old city of Berat clings to steep limestone slopes cleft by the turquoise Osum River. Known universally as the 'Town of a Thousand Windows', its stacked white Ottoman houses in the Mangalem and Gorica quarters feature uniform rows of large rectangular timber-framed windows that seem carved into the very cliffside.

What distinguishes Berat from standard open-air museum towns is its genuine, unbroken civic life. Inside the massive stone walls of the Kalaja (Citadel) crowning the hill above, local families still live in century-old stone houses, tending grapevine courtyards and selling handmade lace beside thirteenth-century Byzantine chapels.

The harmony between Muslim and Christian communities has endured here for centuries. Historic mosques like the King Mosque and Halveti Teqe stand a short walk from the Cathedral of the Dormition of St. Mary, which houses the luminous sixteenth-century red frescoes of master iconographer Onufri.
