Zeeland & Delta Works in 60 seconds

Zeeland ('Sea Land') is an archipelago province sculptured by centuries of titanic struggle against the North Sea. Built in response to the devastating North Sea flood of 1953, the Delta Works (Deltawerken) represent one of the greatest engineering feats in human history, declared a modern Wonder of the World. Its crowning glory is the nine-kilometre Oosterscheldekering, an open storm-surge barrier whose sixty-two colossal steel sluice gates can be lowered during severe gales. Beyond the engineering wonders, Zeeland offers pure coastal tranquility: the grand abbey and Gothic town hall of capital Middelburg, the ancient Scottish wool port of Veere, the oyster-farming pits of Yerseke, and the sunny white-sand dunes of Domburg and Zoutelande.
