Ulcinj in 60 seconds

Sitting at Montenegro's southernmost edge near the Albanian border, Ulcinj is a multi-layered coastal city with an exotic, corsair past. Founded in the 5th century BC by Illyrians, the clifftop Kalaja (Old Town) was once an infamous Barbary pirate stronghold where Cervantes was reportedly held captive. Below the fortress stretches the extraordinary Velika Plaža—a 13-kilometre expanse of healing volcanic dark sand and premier kitesurfing winds—leading down to the triangular river delta island of Ada Bojana with its stilted wooden fish cabins.
