Turku in 60 seconds

Founded in the 13th century at the mouth of the Aura River, Turku (Åbo) is Finland's oldest city and its ancient historical capital until Tsar Alexander I shifted the seat of power to Helsinki in 1812. The city's beating heart is the riverfront, where locals promenade past historic sailing ships, wooden quayside restaurants, and the iconic little orange city ferry, Föri, which has pulled itself across the river by chain cable since 1904. Dominating the river mouth stands Turku Castle (Turun linna), a colossal stone fortress established in 1280 that witnessed Renaissance pageants under Swedish King Gustav Vasa and Duke John. Upriver rises Turku Cathedral, consecrated in 1300 as the nation's spiritual mother church. Even after the catastrophic Great Fire of 1827 leveled much of the city, the wooden quarter of Luostarinmäki survived intact, preserved today as an evocative living museum of 18th-century craft workshops.
