Porta Nigra
Roman city gate in dark sandstone

In 60 seconds
Trier is Germany's richest Roman urban stop, with the Porta Nigra, baths and amphitheatre dispersed through a walkable centre. The Moselle changes the pace: vineyards climb the valley sides and small river towns reward a slow rail or boat journey. Keep the two experiences distinct rather than treating wine as an add-on to the monuments. The Roman sites form a UNESCO World Heritage property with the cathedral and Church of Our Lady.
