Travnik in 60 seconds

Nestled in the narrow valley of the Lašva River flanked by the towering limestone ridge of Mount Vlašić, Travnik served for more than 150 years (1699–1850) as the capital of the Ottoman governors (viziers) of Bosnia. Dubbed the 'European Istanbul' by Ottoman chroniclers, the town preserves a striking oriental skyline of slender minarets, clock towers, and traditional timber-framed houses. High above the valley floor sits the formidable 15th-century Stari Grad Fortress, guarding the narrow pass. Below, the famous Plava Voda (Blue Water) karst spring bubbles cold into shaded canals, while the unique Šarena Džamija (Decorated Mosque) boasts colourful exterior floral frescoes and an integrated bazaar arcade.
