Transfăgărășan in 60 seconds

Renowned as one of the world's most spectacular mountain roads, the Transfăgărășan (DN7C) winds ninety kilometres over the rugged crest of the Făgăraș Mountains, the highest range in Romania. Built between 1970 and 1974 as a strategic military route across the Transylvanian Alps, the highway snakes through dramatic glacial valleys via dozens of dizzying hairpin switchbacks, sheer viaducts, and five tunnels. At its highest pass, 2,042 metres above sea level, lies glacial Lake Bâlea, where sheer granite peaks reflect in crystal-clear alpine waters and a winter ice hotel is constructed annually. During summer months, the highway serves as the premier trailhead for ascents to Mount Moldoveanu, Romania's highest mountain peak.
