Trakai in 60 seconds

Located just 28 kilometres west of Vilnius amidst a pristine labyrinth of over thirty glacial lakes, Trakai is the historic capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and one of the most romantic destinations in Eastern Europe. Its crowning jewel is Trakai Island Castle, a fairytale 14th-century red-brick Gothic fortress constructed on an islet in Lake Galvė by Grand Duke Kęstutis and his son Vytautas the Great. Reached via a wooden pedestrian bridge, the fortress encloses an inner courtyard, grand ducal ducal halls and defensive ramparts surrounded entirely by shimmering water. Trakai is equally renowned for its Karaite community—a Turkic-speaking ethnic group practicing a distinctive branch of Judaism who were brought here from Crimea in 1397 as Grand Ducal royal bodyguards. Their distinctive wooden homes, kenesa prayer house, and golden crescent-shaped savoury pastries (kibinai) define the town's living culture.
