Szentendre in 60 seconds

Perched on the right bank of the Danube just twenty kilometres north of Budapest at the gateway to the Danube Bend, Szentendre is a charming, pastel-washed town with a distinct Mediterranean character. Following the Ottoman reconquest in 1690, thousands of Serbian refugees settled here under Patriarch Arsenije III Čarnojević, building seven ornate Orthodox churches, merchant townhouses, and intimate courtyards. In the early 20th century, painters, sculptors, and ceramists were drawn by the brilliant riverside light, founding a famous artists' colony that continues to define the town today. Cobblestone alleyways climb past vibrant art galleries, ceramic workshops, and marzipan confectioners towards Castle Hill, while the willow-fringed Danube promenade invites peaceful sunset strolls.
