Szeged in 60 seconds

Known as the 'City of Sunshine' for recording the highest annual sunlight hours in Hungary, Szeged is a radiant university city straddling the Tisza River near the southern borders with Serbia and Romania. After a catastrophic flood virtually wiped out the town in 1879, Emperor Franz Joseph and European capitals rallied to rebuild it on a modern ring-and-radial boulevard plan, sparking a spectacular architectural boom. The result is one of Europe's premier open-air galleries of Art Nouveau (Secessionist) architecture, epitomised by the undulating water-lily façades of the Reök Palace and the luminous stained glass of the New Synagogue. Szeged is also Hungary's uncontested culinary temple for sweet paprika, winter salami, and the iconic Szegedi halászlé — a thick, fiery fisherman's soup simmered in open-fire cauldrons along the riverbanks.
