Spiš Castle & Levoča in 60 seconds

Crowning an imposing travertine bluff that rises 200 metres above the rolling Spiš plains, Spiš Castle (Spišský hrad) is one of the largest fortified feudal complexes in Central Europe, covering over four hectares of dramatic limestone ruins. Built in the twelfth century on an ancient Celtic fort site, it withstood the Tartar invasion before evolving into the regional seat of Hungarian noble dynasties. Down in the valley lies Levoča, a magnificent UNESCO Renaissance walled town whose crowning treasure is the Basilica of St. James. Here, Master Paul of Levoča hand-carved the world's tallest Gothic wooden altar in 1517—an 18.6-metre masterwork of lime wood. Together with the nearby ecclesiastical ecclesiastical town of Spišská Kapitula (the 'Slovak Vatican'), the region represents an incomparable concentration of medieval art and architecture.
