Sozopol in 60 seconds

Perched on a rocky promontory curling into the southern Black Sea, Sozopol is one of Bulgaria's most romantic and historic coastal towns. Founded in 610 BC by Milesian Greeks as Apollonia Pontica, the city was famed throughout antiquity for its colossal 13-metre bronze statue of Apollo sculpted by Calamis. Today, the town's defining charm lies in its cobblestone lanes lined with two-story Bulgarian National Revival timber houses, whose dark oak weatherboarding and blooming bougainvillea jut out over sheer sea cliffs and pounding surf. Below the ancient ramparts, sandy coves with turquoise water and seaside taverns serve fresh Black Sea mussels, grilled turbot, and chilled tarator under grapevine canopies.
