Sopron in 60 seconds

Cuddled into the foothills of the Alps right on the Austrian border just sixty kilometres south of Vienna, Sopron is Hungary's most medieval city. Because it miraculously escaped Turkish occupation and Second World War destruction, its horseshoe-shaped old core preserves intact Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque façades built directly upon the Roman ramparts of Scarbantia. The city's undisputed icon is the 58-metre Firewatch Tower (Tűztorony); beneath it sits the 'Gate of Loyalty', honouring the 1921 plebiscite in which citizens chose to remain part of Hungary, earning Sopron the title 'Civitas Fidelissima'. Sopron's distinctive Poncichter culture — German-speaking vintners who planted beans between rows of vines — lives on in intimate family taverns pouring peppery Kékfrankos red wines. In August 1989, Sopron stepped onto the world stage during the Pan-European Picnic, which dismantled the Iron Curtain.
