Soča Valley in 60 seconds

Cutting a dramatic emerald-turquoise scar through the limestone massifs of the Julian Alps, the Soča River (known in Italian as the Isonzo) is celebrated as one of the most mesmerizing mountain waterways on Earth. Its unearthly luminescence — a vivid fluorescent turquoise caused by microscopic limestone particles — draws nature lovers, white-water rafters, and fly fishermen in pursuit of the elusive indigenous marble trout (soška postrv). The valley is anchored by Bovec, Slovenia's undisputed outdoor adventure capital, and historic Kobarid, where Ernest Hemingway set scenes of 'A Farewell to Arms' amidst the tragic mountain trenches of the First World War Isonzo Front. From swimming in the deep natural pools of the Great Soča Gorge to hiking across wooden suspension footbridges to the secret cavern of Kozjak Waterfall, this is European mountain drama at its peak.
