Škocjan Caves in 60 seconds

If Postojna is a fairytale palace, Škocjan Caves (Škocjanske jame) is the Mines of Moria: raw, monumental, and awe-inspiring. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1986, Škocjan protects one of the largest subterranean river canyons in existence. Here, the torrential Reka River vanishes beneath the earth at the base of a staggering 160-metre collapsed doline and roars through an underground canyon measuring over a hundred metres deep and two million cubic metres in volume. Visitors walk along footpaths carved into vertical cliffs in the dim cavern gloom, culminating in the crossing of the breathtaking Cerkvenik Bridge — suspended forty-seven metres directly above the thundering underground river. Unlike commercialised caves, Škocjan preserves an authentic, solemn atmosphere where primeval geology, roaring waters, and colossal limestone rimstone pools dominate every step.
