Seven Rila Lakes in 60 seconds

Cascading like natural crystal steps down a glacial cirque between 2,100 and 2,535 metres above sea level, the Seven Rila Lakes (Sedemte Rilski Ezera) constitute Bulgaria's most celebrated alpine landscape. Each glacial tarn carries a descriptive name inspired by its shape and character: Salzata ('The Tear'), famous for crystal-clear depths; Okoto ('The Eye'), an almost perfect cobalt oval and Bulgaria's deepest cirque lake at 37.5 metres; Babreka ('The Kidney'), with its steep rocky shores; Bliznaka ('The Twin'), the largest by surface area; Trilistnika ('The Trefoil'); Ribnoto Ezero ('The Fish Lake'); and Dolnoto Ezero ('The Lower Lake'), which gathers the waters into the Dzherman River. A scenic two-seater chairlift ascends from Panichishte to the Rila Lakes Hut, launching hikers along wildflower ridges to Lake Peak for a panoramic view of all seven tarns simultaneously.
