Rundāle Palace in 60 seconds

Surrounded by the gentle plains of Zemgale in southern Latvia, Rundāle Palace (Rundāles pils) is widely regarded as the crowning architectural jewel of the Baltic states. Designed by Italian-Russian court architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli—the master who designed the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg—the palace was conceived in 1736 as the extravagant summer residence for Ernst Johann von Biron, Duke of Courland. Painstakingly restored over five decades following centuries of war and neglect, the 138-room palace dazzles with gilded stucco work by Johann Michael Graff, illusionistic ceiling frescoes by Italian masters Martini and Zucchi, and the gleaming White Hall, originally crafted as a grand ballroom. Outside, Rastrelli's French baroque formal garden unfolds across ten hectares with intricate ornamental parterres, an open-air green amphitheatre, and a celebrated rose garden cultivating over 2,200 varieties.
