Rovaniemi in 60 seconds

Straddling the confluence of the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers directly at the line of the Arctic Circle (66°33′46″N), Rovaniemi is the urban capital of Finnish Lapland. Completely razed by retreating German troops during the 1944 Lapland War, the city was brilliantly rebuilt by master modernist architect Alvar Aalto, who arranged the town plan in the organic shape of a reindeer's antlered head. Today, Rovaniemi is globally famous as the official hometown of Santa Claus; at Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle, travellers can step across the marked geographical boundary, meet Santa year-round, and send letters bearing the unique Arctic Circle postmark. In the centre, the iconic 172-metre glass barrel vault of the Arktikum Museum cuts through the snow towards the frozen river, offering an incomparable window into Arctic indigenous Sámi culture, sub-zero ecosystems, and the science of the Northern Lights.
