Rila Monastery in 60 seconds

Tucked deep inside a forested alpine valley in the Rila Mountains at 1,147 metres elevation, the Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila (Rila Monastery) is Bulgaria's most revered spiritual sanctuary and a UNESCO World Heritage treasure. Founded in the tenth century by hermit monk Ivan of Rila, the monastery served for a millennium as the guardian of Bulgarian national identity, language, and culture through centuries of foreign rule. Rising like an austere medieval fortress from the outside, the inner cobblestone courtyard dazzles visitors with four tiers of black-and-white striped arched galleries, intricately carved wooden loggias, and the central Nativity of the Virgin Church, whose open cloister is entirely covered in brilliant nineteenth-century biblical frescoes painted by Zahari Zograf and master iconographers.
