Ptuj in 60 seconds

Jutting above the Drava River in eastern Slovenia, Ptuj is the country's oldest recorded town, settled continuously since the Stone Age. Here in 69 AD, Roman legions confirmed Emperor Vespasian on the imperial throne in ancient Poetovio, which grew into a colossal military metropolis of 40,000 citizens with mysterious Mithraic temples. Today, Ptuj is a living museum of red terracotta roofs, medieval cobblestones, and ancient wine cellars crowned by Ptuj Castle (Ptujski grad), whose noble halls shelter exceptional collections of feudal musical instruments and tapestries. Ptuj is globally famous for the UNESCO-inscribed Kurentovanje carnival: every February, shaggy sheepskin-clad figures known as Kurenti march through the streets wielding heavy wooden clubs and deafening cowbells to scare away winter and usher in spring fertility.
